[ARCHIVED] We diverted how much waste?!

Elephant

The 2021 recycling stats have been compiled and Hamilton County residents and businesses’ efforts to reduce waste, recycle, compost, and rescue food have had a quantifiable impact. We diverted 1,349,370 tons from the landfill! That equals 224,895 African elephants, the heaviest mammal on earth!

The cumulative efforts have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 2,390,282 MTCO2E (metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent). That is the equivalent of:

  • removing 507,491 passenger vehicles from the road for a year
  • conserving 268,963,934 gallons of gasoline

Another way to look at it is that we conserved 16,481,921 million BTUs of energy. That is equivalent to:

  • 179,910 households’ annual energy consumption
  • 2,836,819 barrels of oil
  • 136,833,500 gallons of gasoline

So congratulations, Hamilton County. And keep up the great work. Learn more about what you can recycle, how to start a backyard compost pile, and how to reduce wasted food.
