Middletown

As part of the permit-to-install issued to SunCoke Energy Middletown Operations (formerly known as the Middletown Coke Company), the facility was required to set-up monitors to measure the concentrations of several air contaminants. The air monitors began operating in June 2011 and measure the concentrations of particulate matter 2.5 microns and smaller (PM2.5), particulate matter 10 microns and smaller (PM10), sulfur dioxide, and various volatile organic compounds. One monitoring site is located on Yankee Road, east of the facility, and another site is at Amanda Elementary on Oxford State Road.

The PM2.5, PM10, and sulfur dioxide monitors were required to be operated for a minimum of five years after start-up of the facility. The volatile organic compound monitors were to be operated for a minimum of two years after start-up of the facility. The facility started operation in October 2011.

A third monitoring site monitoring for sulfur dioxide was added in 2013 as a result of a legal settlement. It is located on MADE Industrial Drive, off Yankee Road. This monitor was required to be operated for a minimum of five years after its installation date of June 1, 2013.
